You know what you’re retiring from.

What will you retire to?

Whether you want a traditional retirement, a pivot to an Encore career, or a new pace that blends "retirement" with the work that you love, you need a financial roadmap designed around what's most important to you in life.

SecondHalf Planning & Investment is a Portland, Oregon fee-only retirement planning and wealth management firm. We specialize in helping people in their 50s and 60s get retirement-ready and then enjoy the life of financial independence they want.

Retire on your terms, not some artificial finish line or preconceived lifestyle pushed by society's expectations or the financial industry.

Why Choose Us?

We Know Retirement Transitions and the Second Half of Life

You only get one chance to live your best life in retirement. And it's not just about the money, there are important non-financial factors as well. Tap our expertise in retirement lifestyle, integrating work with "retirement," Social Security strategies, income and distribution complexities, aging, housing decisions, estate issues, and end-of-life matters.

Our Investment Management Plays Defense

Large investment losses can be tough to take at any age, but devastating to your retirement nest egg. Most advisors put your investments in a static model portfolio which simply rides the markets wherever they go. Our Defender Tactical Strategies seek to minimize the downside while capturing a reasonable amount of financial upside when market conditions allow.

We Speak Tax

Do you know how to "play chess" with your retirement resources to keep the tax man in check? Are you tired of always filing last year's return with no planning to minimize future taxes? Tax permeates our thinking. In addition, we have a relationship with McClanahan Tax & Advisory for clients needing tax preparation and related services.

Comprehensive Retirement Planning

Planning for retirement (or financial independence) is not just about the money--it's about making the most of your life's second half.

We help you create a Roadmap for Retirement that harmonizes the life you want with what's possible given your financial resources. This financial plan is living, continuously-updated, and you have 24/7 online access to your status. Our planning also includes Retirement Transition Coaching elements to help you address the non-financial factors that are critical to a fulfilling retirement.

Initial Financial Planning

Roadmap for Retirement includes:

  • Comprehensive retirement review and analysis including: spending plan, Social Security, pension, investments, retirement accounts, tax issues, healthcare/Medicare, and estate matters. See Services Matrix for entire list.
  • Meeting to review findings together and create your Roadmap.
  • Stress test Roadmap for sustainability and the risks of various “bad stuff” scenarios.
  • Recommendations on areas needing attention and a written checklist of action steps.
  • 30 day online access to Roadmap (no limit if you retain our ongoing services).
  • 30 day email access to us for questions (no time limit if you retain us).

Fee:  typically $2,000-$4,000, depending on client needs and complexity

Ongoing Financial Management

Wealth Management

So you've created a Roadmap for Retirement and your plan gives you confidence and peace of mind. You're set for the journey.

But perhaps you don't love researching investments, watching the markets, and making investment decisions. Maybe you'd rather not be bothered with keeping up on the latest tax law changes, estate developments, and financial strategies. You'd rather spend your time with the people you love and the interests you enjoy most.

We completely understand and offer ongoing Wealth Management services to clients who'd like us to handle those matters and manage their assets.

As a Wealth Management client, we will manage your investments using our Defender Tactical Strategies rather than static portfolio models. You will also receive the following at no additional charge:

  • Routine financial planning reviews and updates to your Roadmap for Retirement.
  • 24/7 online access for monitoring your Roadmap and/or aggregated household accounts.
  • Convenience of periodic review with us at your home or office for local clients (by phone or online for distant clients).

Hi, I’m Larry McClanahan.

The retirement transition and modern aging are complex matters with a lot of moving parts. Too many folks fail to plan properly and make unsalvageable retirement and investment decisions.

My specialty is helping people in their 50s and 60s (second-halfers) create a financial roadmap that will serve them well, and then walking the path of life with them as their advisor.

But I haven't always been into financial planning...initially I was headed toward the ministry. After earning my ministry degree I discovered an aptitude for business and management, so more studies and a change in career path.

I’ve been an Accountant, City Manager, and Vice President & CFO of a 5-school education institution. And while I was good at financial and organizational management, there's just something very satisfying about helping people get clarity on their financial picture.

Our clients come to us from a wide variety of backgrounds but they share certain values, lifestage, retirement and investment concerns, and how they prefer to work with their advisor.

We might be a good fit to work together if:

  • You are in the second half of life (age 50+)—within a few years of retirement, already enjoying retirement, or engaged in an Encore career.
  • You understand the importance of a well-planned retirement transition and the value of periodic retirement check-ups to stay on track.
  • You want to delegate portfolio management ($250,000+) to a professional who “plays defense” to help protect against large losses.
  • You prefer to spend time with the people you love and interests you enjoy most, instead of watching markets, making investment decisions, and managing financial details.

I keep hearing the term fiduciary advisor. What does that mean?
