You know what you’re retiring from.

What will you retire to?

SecondHalf Planning & Investment is a Portland, Oregon area fee-only retirement planning and wealth management firm. We specialize in helping people in their 50s and 60s get retirement-ready and then enjoy the life of financial independence they want.

Whether you want a traditional retirement, a pivot to an Encore career, or a new pace that blends "retirement" with the work that you love, you need a financial roadmap designed around what's most important to you in life.

Retire on your terms, not some artificial finish line or preconceived lifestyle pushed by society's expectations or the financial industry.

Why Choose Us?

We Know Retirement and Life's Second Half

Your best life in retirement is not just about the money, there are important non-financial factors as well. Tap our expertise in retirement lifestyle, integrating work with "retirement," Social Security strategies, income and distribution complexities, aging, estate issues, and end-of-life matters.

We Speak Tax

Do you know how to coordinate and distribute your retirement resources in a tax-smart way? Are you tired of always filing last year's return with no plan to minimize future taxes? Tax planning permeates our thinking. And clients can tap McClanahan Tax for tax preparation and related services.

Our Investment Management Plays Defense

Large investment losses can be devastating in retirement. Most advisors use static model portfolios which simply ride the markets wherever they go. Our defensive tactical strategies seek to reduce downside while capturing a reasonable amount of financial upside when market conditions allow.

Wealth Management

So you've created a Roadmap for Retirement and your plan gives you confidence and peace of mind. You're set for the journey.

But perhaps you don't love researching investments, watching the markets, and making investment decisions. You'd rather spend your time with the people you love and the interests you enjoy most.

We completely understand and offer ongoing Wealth Management services to clients who'd like us to handle those matters and manage their assets.

As a Wealth Management client, we will manage your investments using defensive tactical strategies rather than static portfolio models. We also offer the following at no additional charge:

Larry McClanahan, CFP®, CASL, EA

Hi, I’m Larry McClanahan.

My specialty is helping people in their 50s and 60s (second-halfers) create a financial roadmap that will serve them well, and then walking the path of life with them as their advisor.

But I haven't always been into financial planning...initially I was headed toward the ministry. After earning my ministry degree I discovered an aptitude for business and management, so more studies and a change in career path.

I’ve been an Accountant, City Manager, VP & CFO of a private college, and CFO of a Canadian startup firm. And while I was good at financial and organizational management, there's just something very satisfying about helping individual folks get clarity on their financial picture.

So in 1999, I shifted into personal financial planning and, as they say, the rest is history. I like how real financial planning melds the qualitative human side (priorities, behavior) with the quantitative financial element (strategies, "the math").

Our clients come to us from a wide variety of backgrounds but they share certain values, lifestage, retirement and investment concerns, and how they prefer to work with their advisor.

We might be a good fit to work together if:

  • You are in the second half of life (age 50+)—within a few years of retirement, already enjoying retirement, or engaged in an Encore career.
  • You understand the importance of a well-planned retirement transition and the value of periodic retirement check-ups to stay on track.
  • You want to delegate portfolio management ($300,000+) to a professional who “plays defense” to help protect against large losses.
  • You prefer to spend time with the people you love and interests you enjoy most, instead of watching markets, making investment decisions, and managing financial details.

I keep hearing the term fiduciary advisor. What does that mean?

A fiduciary advisor is one who puts the interests of the client first at all times. Not all advisors are fiduciaries, some wear the fiduciary hat only at certain times, others are just pretenders.

Financial Planning and services is an intangible that deals with clients' financial hopes and priorities far into the future. It's not like buying a car or a stove now where you can touch it, size it up, and test drive it. You need a trustworthy, competent professional because "buyer beware" just doesn't fly in financial services in the same way.

Most folks are best served by a professional that's truly interested in them and fully embraces a fiduciary standard. We are an acknowledged fiduciary at all times.
